Collection instructions
Serum Separator Tube (SST) – 0.5 ml serum, free from hemolysis.
Processing
Follow all precaution for handling biological material. Use all appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Allow blood samples to clot (15 mins). Separate the serum from the cells by centrifuging for 10 minutes. Store serum at 2-8°C until analysis. Samples should be protected from light. Exposure to direct sunlight can decrease bilirubin in samples by 50% with in one hour.
Storage
Refrigerated.
Stability
After separation of cells, When well protected from light, bilirubin in serum is stable for up to 3 days at 2 – 8°C ; Frozen: three months when stored at<-20°C in the dark.
Rejection criteria
Any sample that is mislabeled; Any broken or damaged tubes.
